Waarvoor? Waarin? Waarover? Sounds familiar to you? When I first started reading Dutch books, I found this type of waar-construction a little intimidating. Even after completing my C1 Dutch language training, I have to admit this is still a topic I tend to avoid.
Perhaps the best way to overcome that fear is to face it—or at least get more familiar with it. Here, I’ve written down my understanding of the waar. The rest I’ll leave to practice, because practice is what makes perfect.
Inleiding (Introduction, 简介)
De constructie waar+voorzetsel terugverwijst naar een ding of zaak, gecombineerd met een voorzetsel dat een ruimtelijke, temporele, causale of andere semantische relatie uitdrukt. Waar+voorzetsel refers back to a thing or matter that is mentioned in the preious sentenses. That expresses a spatial, temporal, causal, or other semantic relationship. This combination can function as a relative pronoun in a relative clause or as an interrogative pronoun in a direct or indirect question. 此结构用于表达空间、时间、因果或其他语义关系。在关系从句中用作关系代词,也可以在直接或间接疑问句中用作疑问代词。
Rol als betrekkelijk voornaamwoord (Role as a relative pronoun,用作关系代词)
In de rol van betrekkelijk voornaamwoord verwijst waar+voorzetsel naar een zelfstandig naamwoord in de hoofdzin. Dit woord noemen we het antecedent. De combinatie leidt een bijzin in die extra informatie over dat antecedent geeft. It refers to a noun in the main clause. This word is called the antecedent. The combination introduces a subordinate clause that provides additional information about the antecedent.它是指向主句中的一个名词, 也就是先行词。那么它引导的从句就为这个先行名词提供更多的附加信息。
The preposition in waar+preposition can be found in three ways. 三种组合方式
(1)Preposition belongs to the antecedent itself. 介词属于先行(名)词。
(2)Preposition is part of a fixed combination with the verb in the subordinate clause. 介词与从句动词是固定搭配。
(3)Preposition is attached to another word in the subordinate clause. 介词与从句中的一个词(形容词或名词)构成固定的介词短语。
Rol als vragend voornaamwoord (Role as an interr ogative pronoun, 用作疑问代词)
It refers to an unknown relationship or location specified by the preposition. The preposition forms a semantic unit with a word in the sentence. 它指代一种未知关系或位置。介词与句子中的单词构成语义单位,对于它的理解取决于句法关系。
Methoden voor disambiguatie (Disambiguation Methods, 消灭歧义法)
Substitution, in which waar is replaced by its antecedent; 替换法,用先行词替换waar。
Meaning check, which checks whether the verb without the preposition is still meaningful; 检查句子意思,尝试去掉介词看句子是否还意义准确。
Interrogative test, which checks whether the preposition remains directly attached to the verb in a question form. 用提问来测试,把句子变成疑问句看是否改变了动词的意思。
Conclusie (conclusion, 总结)
Its correct interpretation requires insight into the fixed combinations of prepositions with nouns, verbs, and adjectives, as well as skill in analyzing sentence structure. 正确解读它需要深入了解介词与名词、动词和形容词的固定组合,并具备分析句子结构的技能。
