Cobalt blue and Cadmium yellow, the contrast indulged my eyes.
Today I visited van Gogh immersive experience in Utrecht. The famous paintings were projected on the walls in a vast hall. When I am lying back in a beach chair, drifting with the moving paintings, I couldn’t help but wonder why people paint?
Van Gogh suffered from depression and illness while chasing his painting dreams. Later studies of his works even suggest that he might have had a form of color-blindness. However when your eyes meet his colors, immediately you are being embraced by his paintings. You only see a serious painter wanting to express. Could he have lived without painting, or if he had been healthier, could he have reached this much?
No one can truly tell the answer. But in his work I feel the pulse of passion — breathing through the colors, whispering in the shapes, shimmering in the visions of his paintings. This is an expression of life, not limited by whatsoever who you are. Pure, primal passion for living — “I dream my painting, and then I paint my dream.” (Vincent van Gogh)
